Freehold, New Jersey History and Culture

Freehold, New Jersey real estate and surrounding Monmouth County offer a rich history, multiple entertainment and recreation options and some of the best sea and sand anywhere.

The name “Freehold” derives from New Jersey’s practice of calling a county government a “Board of Freeholders,” a term that dates to colonial rule, when freeholders were those who owned their own land and therefore entitled to elect one of themselves as the “chosen freeholder” to represent a town on the county council. Today, each of New Jersey’s 211 counties has a board made up of freeholders elected at large. Property qualifications for holding office were abolished long ago.

Monmouth County was one of the four counties created in 1675 (along with Bergen, Essex and Middlesex counties) when the Province of East Jersey was divided for administrative purposes.

Col. Lewis Morris (1726-98), a signer of the Declaration of Independence, suggested the name of Monmouth County in honor of Monmouthshire, Wales, although Morris was a native of New York. Monmouth Battlefield is one of the best preserved of the Revolutionary War battlefields. Each year, during the last weekend in June, the Battle of Monmouth is reenacted at Monmouth Battlefield State Park in modern Freehold Township and Manalapan.

East Jersey, together with West Jersey, was a distinct, separately-governed province of New Jersey that existed for 28 years, from 1674 to 1702. Its capital was located at Perth Amboy, now a city in Middlesex County.

The first government of Monmouth County was established in 1714.

East Jersey felt the influence of a variety of cultures early on. There had been Dutch settlement prior to the English conquest in 1664 but the Dutch had mostly abandoned the west side of the Hudson River (which includes Monmouth County) after conflicts with the native people.

The Delaware Valley had been inhabited for hundreds — and perhaps thousands — of years by the Lenni Lenape Indians (also known as the Delaware Indians) prior to European exploration and settlement beginning in 1609, first by the Dutch, and later the Swedish and English. Settlement of the West Jersey area by Europeans was thin until the English conquest in 1664. The Dutch had established one or two Delaware River settlements, but by the late 1620s had moved most of their inhabitants to Manhattan (part of New York City), which became the center of New Netherland (which included land that now ranges from upstate New York to Delaware).

Many New Jersey colonists became farmers, but despite fertile soil, they struggled financially. Transportation was difficult. The majority of the colonists lived in simple log cabins, a mode of living attributable to the Dutch, the original settlers. Since New Jersey is ideally located next to the coast, colonists farmed, fished and traded by sea.

With a location midway between New York City and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Monmouth County became an important hub for colonial travelers and traders.

Built at the request of New York merchants wanting to protect their ships entering the harbor, the Sandy Hook Lighthouse was lighted for the first time in 1764. The 103-foot-high octagonal tower was the fifth lighthouse in the colonies and remains the oldest operating lighthouse in the U.S. after a restoration in 2000. The lighthouse was occupied by British soldiers during the American Revolution and was bombarded by cannons fired by patriot troops. It was also the sanctuary to local refugees who were sympathizers of the King of England.

Fort Monmouth began in 1917 as a small cluster of tents for the signal corp. Today it is the home of the U.S. Army Communications and Electronics Command headquarters.

Allaire State Park, at Farmingdale, New Jersey, consists of 3,035 acres located on New Jersey’s Outer Coastal Plain. This pine and oak forest is similar to that found in the heart of New Jersey’s Pinelands National Reserve. The Manasquan River bisects the park and flows east to the Atlantic Ocean. Best known for its historic village and narrow gauge railroad, Allaire State Park also provides opportunities for picnicking, canoeing, hiking, horseback riding, camping, hunting and fishing. Historic Allaire Village is situated within the park. Originally the site of a bog iron furnace and forge that date back to the late 1700s, this self-contained community once was home to more than 400 people. Products manufactured at the village included caldrons, pots and kettles, stoves, screws and pipe. Within the park, there are facilities for picnicking and camping. The park has a nature center that is staffed by a naturalist in the summer. The village general store offers a variety of novelties and gifts. During the summer, many of the village buildings are staffed by interpretive volunteers that provide living history demonstrations. Visitors can fish for stocked trout, rent a horse at nearby liveries, hike the 25 miles of multi-use trails, or simply spread a blanket on the grass and enjoy the views. The Pine Creek Railroad in the park, established in 1960, is the only live-steam, narrow-gauge train ride in New Jersey today. It is an example of the rail travel used to open up the American frontier. Additionally, the 18-hole Spring Meadow Golf Course adjacent to the park is open to the public.

The Christ Church of Middletown, on the corner of King’s Highway and Church Street, has served a Church of England congregation since the 1680s. The present Christ Church of Middletown building was erected in 1836, using the blockhouse foundation dating to 1670.

The Christ Church of Shrewsbury has served an Episcopal congregation founded since 1702. The 1769 Christ Church building, designed by colonial architect Robert Smith, stands at the corner of Broad Street (Route 35) and Sycamore Avenue. A clock tower with bell was added in 1874. The church was used as a barracks during the Revolutionary War, resulting in a bullet hole in the steeple and a musket ball embedded in the original pulpit. Many settlers of Monmouth County are buried in the graveyard surrounding the church, with the earliest grave marker dated 1719. Inside are a number of objects of historical interest. These include a 1716 “Vinegar” bible famed for the misprints it contains, a Bishop’s chair carved from a church yard oak by the parish clerk, the communion service given to the church by Queen Anne in 1708 and the parish’s royal charter granted in 1738.

The Monmouth County Historical Association was founded in 1898 by a group of community-minded citizens in order to preserve a record of the history and fine traditions of Monmouth County. In 1931, a three-story Georgian building was erected at 70 Court Street in Freehold Borough to house its museum and library, which contain an outstanding collection of American decorative arts objects and relics of regional significance. The first two floors have been arranged in galleries or period rooms devoted to the exhibition of furniture, porcelain, glass, silver and paintings from the 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries. The third floor contains Indian artifacts, home crafts and a wide variety of objects from the Colonial era through the late 19th century.

Long Branch prospered and grew from the nation’s first seashore resort to become the “summer capital of the nation.” Seven U.S. presidents (Grant, Hayes, Wilson, Garfield, Arthur, Harrison and McKinley) all chose to summer and worship there. In 1881, the St. James Episcopal Chapel was built and consecrated. Constructed in the traditional shape of a cross, its architecture resembles a cottage of the pseudo-Tudor design which was so popular in the 1880s. Now the home of the Long Branch Historical Museum containing artifacts and memorabilia relating to Long Branch’s national historical role, the original altar, transepts and part of the nave are preserved. The museum is on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as the state register.

Woodrow Wilson Hall, the administrative headquarters of Monmouth University, at West Long Branch, New Jersey, is located in the former Shadow Lawn mansion, which was the private residence of late Woolworth Co. president Hubert Parson. The mansion was erected in 1930 on the foundations of President Woodrow Wilson’s Summer White House. The mansion is the centerpiece building on the 125-acre campus of Monmouth University, an independent, coeducational institution offering comprehensive four-year baccalaureate programs as well as programs leading to the master’s degree.

Historic Walnford is the 36-acre Historic District at the heart of Crosswick Creek Park. The site includes a large home built for the Waln Family in 1774, an 1879 Carriage House and assorted outbuildings and farm structures. Much of the site’s interpretation is connected to the newly restored and operating late 19th century Gristmill.
