Travelers’ Site Pick For Best Beach is Fort DeSoto, Florida
If you’re considering buying a second property or vacation home, then here’s a tidbit that might peak your interest. Which vacation destination can boast the best beach in the country? The word from Trip Advisor’s travelers and staffers alike is…(drum roll please…) Fort DeSoto Park’s North Beach, southwest of St. Petersburg, Florida.Trip Advisor, touting itself as the world’s largest Internet travel community, gave Florida’s Fort DeSoto its top spot, calling the beach “a portrait of tranquility, with a spectacular combination of soft, white sand, calm and clear water, and a laid-back atmosphere.”
Fort DeSoto, Florida Rules Best Beaches Lists
Fort DeSoto, Florida also rated #1 Beach in the Nation on Dr. Beach’s annual best beaches list back in 2005. For more than 15 years, Dr. Beach, a.k.a. Stephen Leatherman, Ph.D, a professor of environmental studies at Florida International University in Miami and director of Laboratory Coastal Research, has been traveling from coast-to-coast looking for the nation’s best beaches. He considers more than 60 criteria in his beach assessment, including sand and water quality, water temperature, beach management, beach facilities and litter control.
When it comes to his ratings, beauty matters - but the beach has to be user friendly for beach-goers as well. If I had to hike a mile to access the beach, endure being pricked by sand spurs and eaten alive by mosquitoes, then discover the only restroom was back where I parked the car, I doubt I would make the effort - even if the shoreline was the most pristine in all the world! And that’s exactly why Dr. Beach takes these important things into account - and he asks for feedback from the experts, rangers and naturalists too. To be fair, once a locale rates #1 on Dr. Beach’s annual America’s Best Beaches list, the winner is retired from the competition.
What did Dr. Beach have to say about Fort DeSoto?
“This beach, which frequently appears in my Top 10, is set in a natural wilderness, but still close to all the amenities of nearby St. Petersburg Beach. This Pinellas County Park is spread over five islands and encompasses about 900 acres. The park is known for its birding, but it is also a great area for camping, biking and fishing. It is fun to explore the park relics – including gun emplacements and ammunition rooms — of old Fort De Soto on Mullet Key.” - Dr. Beach
If you’re thinking about investing in a vacation property or second home, why not buy a home near the best beach in the country? The cities of Clearwater and Tampa have a good inventory of single-family homes, townhomes, and condos for sale in all price ranges, and they’re a short drive from Fort DeSoto Park’s North Beach.
