Spring Hill, Florida Area Demographics

Spring Hill, Florida real estate is located in the southwest corner of Hernando County and lies along the southern part of Florida’s Nature Coast, which extends from the Sunshine State’s Big Bend area to just north of Tampa. Located about 40 miles north of the St. Petersburg-Clearwater-Tampa metropolitan area, Spring Hill is really a world away from the big city. With a population of 69,078 (2000 U.S. Census), Spring Hill is home to about half of the residents of Hernando County (population: 130, 802). The entire area has grown considerably over the past few decades; the county was home to just 11,000 people as recently as 1960. At 478 square miles, Hernando County still has plenty of room to grow. Spring Hill’s balmy climate produces 90-degree days in summer months, but the average high in January is also quite comfortable, in the mid-60s.

Hernando County was named for Hernando de Soto, a 14th century Spanish explorer. Around 1840, Fort DeSoto was established near Brooksville. During the Civil War, the state supported the Confederacy and in 1864, federal troops invaded the area in what became known as the Brooksville Raid. Civil War enthusiasts reenact the skirmish annually. In 1887, Hernando County was subdivided to create Citrus County to the north and Pasco County to the south.

The 42-mile limited-access north-south toll road has shortened commuting time significantly.

The Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge, which comprises a portion of the county’s northwest boundary, is an important link in Florida’s green belt of protected wetland wilderness, which now stretches for more than 100 miles (from the Suwannee River delta in the north to Pasco County in the south). This vast and beautiful patchwork of wetland and forest provides unlimited recreational opportunity for hikers, boaters, canoeists, sportsmen, bird watchers and campers. The Withlacoochee State Forest and the Withlacoochee River form part of the county’s eastern border. Hernando County’s rivers and lakes provide freshwater anglers some of the finest bass fishing in Florida and Hernando Beach is now considered to be one of the finest tarpon fishing grounds in the world.

The Weeki Wachee Springs attraction just north of Spring Hill hosts daily mermaid shows, in which women (and now men) dressed as the mythical underwater creatures have entertained and fascinated tourists for some 60 years. A water park and boat rides are also part of the attraction.
