Melbourne, Florida History and CultureMelbourne, Florida real estate has witnessed profound changes during its known history. In prehistoric times the Indian River Lagoon was connected to the ocean. Today, the only connection is by way of a handful of inlets, including the manmade Sebastian Inlet at the southern end of Brevard County. Melbourne is the result of a merger of the separate communities of Melbourne and Eau Gallie, which occurred in 1969. Today, the city is approximately 38 square miles in size, with about 75 percent of that land in use.
Originally the Melbourne area was a training ground for soldiers during the Civil War. After that war, some soldiers, who were attracted to the river and the ocean, returned and bought land at five cents per acre. Soon, pioneer families arrived and Melbourne was founded in the late 1860s by former slaves. The city was named after its first postmaster’s home city of Melbourne, Australia. The first school in Melbourne was built in 1883 and is now part of the Florida Tech campus. In the late 1800s, much of Melbourne’s commercial activity was conducted in wooden buildings clustered along Front Street, located on the Indian River Lagoon shoreline at Melbourne Harbor. Melbourne today features two “old” downtown areas, each with specialty shops and other attractions.
