Fort Myers, Florida History and Culture

Fort Myers, Florida real estate has witnessed profound changes during its history, which spans more than 10,000 years of human habitation, based on the discovery of ancient Indian mounds throughout the area. Spanish explorers landed north of Fort Myers near Sarasota almost 500 years ago. Fort Myers was originally built in 1850 after the Third Seminole War and named after Col. Abraham Charles Myers, then chief quartermaster in Florida. Fort Myers was incorporated in 1886 and the late 1800s and early 1900s were a period of growth and change for Fort Myers, which established itself then as the historical and governmental hub of Lee County as well as the gateway to the Southwest Florida region, a major tourist destination in Florida and a popular place to live for retirees.

The area was considered a “cow town” until northerners began to migrate to Florida for the warm climate and sunshine. In 1885, Thomas Alva Edison came to Fort Myers and made the town his winter home. Another famous resident who wintered in Fort Myers was Henry Ford. The winter homes of both Edison (Seminole Lodge) and Ford (The Mangoes), which are both primary tourist attractions in the region, are located on McGregor Boulevard in Fort Myers.
